How the practice exam works

U.S. amateur radio exams are not random selections from the whole pool. Each question pool is divided into topic subelements, and each subelement into lettered groups. A real exam takes exactly one question from each group, so every exam covers the same mix of topics.

Our exam simulation works the same way: one question from each group, 35 for Technician and General, 50 for Amateur Extra. You can move back and forth, flag questions to revisit, and finish when you are ready. Your score, a topic-by-topic breakdown, and explanations appear at the end.

Prefer to learn as you go? Study mode shows the right answer and explanation after every question, and you can limit it to a single topic.

The pool dates matter. Pools are replaced on a fixed schedule (July 1), and studying an expired pool means some of your questions will not appear on the exam. The next change is a new General pool on July 1, 2027.

Study recommendations

  • Take a baseline test first. One full exam shows you which topics need the most work.
  • Drill weak topics in study mode. Read the explanation for every miss, not just the correct letter.
  • Use the full question pool. The Technician, General and Extra pool pages list every question with its answer.
  • Aim for a margin. Wait until you pass several new practice exams in a row with a few points to spare before you book the real exam.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the ham radio exam?

The Technician and General exams each have 35 questions. The Amateur Extra exam has 50.

What score do I need to pass?

26 correct out of 35 for Technician and General (about 74%), and 37 out of 50 for Amateur Extra.

Are the practice questions the same as the real exam?

Yes. Your real exam questions come from the same public NCVEC pools we use. The answer choices may appear in a different order on exam day.

Can I take more than one exam on the same day?

Many exam teams let you try the next element at the same session after you pass. Ask your team in advance; some charge a fee for each attempt.
